Answer by Dr. Iblis
the best point and shoot camera I know of is the Leica X1, followed by the Fujifilm X100

if you don't want to spend $ 1200 (for the fuji) or $ 2000 (for the leica), then look at consumer cameras, such as the Canon S95, G12, or Nikon P7000

SLR's vs Point and Shoot Cameras

This is a quick and simple description of how an SLR camera differs from a point and shoot camera. This free lesson was brought to you by: http://www.michael...

What is a good Film Point and Shoot Camera for someone interested in beginning Photography ?

Question by Curious: What is a good Film Point and Shoot Camera for someone interested in beginning Photography ?
...it's amateur, hobby type of thing...so an SLR isn't really in the question or price range.

I want a good film point and shoot camera that can take pictures comparable to an SLR

Also, is it even possible to begin photography with a good point and shoot film camera over an SLR?

Best answer:

Answer by ILoveTifa
Yes, it is possible. Some of my friends who works as a professional photographer began their careers using film point and shoot camera.

However, why not using a P&S digital camera? You can review your pictures faster, which in turn gives you better understanding of your techniques. Also, the cost of developing film will accumulate quite fast, and in the end, you'll spend more than if you've begun with a P&S digital camera.

Just my 2 cents,

Cheers.

Change the lens on a point and shoot camera?

Question by Janessa R: Change the lens on a point and shoot camera?
This is actually a question my sister has. She's wondering if its possible to put a zoom lens on a point-and-shoot camera. We figured it wasn't possible, but I figured i'd double check just in case someone has heard of a way.

Best answer:

Answer by Joe G
the vast majority of point-and-shoot cameras will not allow lenses to be used.

some however, such as a few cannons, have some grooves around the lens which can fit an adapter, which you can then place a lens on top of. look for this screw-on type ridges around the ridge of your camera lens.

Does a point and shoot camera with a remote shutter exist?

Question by Daniel H: Does a point and shoot camera with a remote shutter exist?
I need to take pictures remotely on a point and shoot camera. Is there an off the shelf item? What are some cameras that support this feature. It can be wire or wireless. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
Some do, but you will have to do the research.

My old Nikon Coolpix 990 had an optional remote control. Others do too, but you will have to drill down into the various camera descriptions and look under the accessories list of each camera

Someone show me comparisons between SLR and Point and shoot camera pictures?

Question by Bones Lulz: Someone show me comparisons between SLR and Point and shoot camera pictures?
I want pictures compared side by side from a regular point-and-shoot camera and a digital SLR camera.

I want to show my father the quality and how much better the SLR camera is. You know, trying to get him to get me one.

Anyone know any websites?

Best answer:

Answer by raybdog
What you're asking is difficult to show by example because in the hands of a skilled photographer, a point and shoot camera can produce almost as good a result as the more versatile SLR for most subjects.

True digital SLRs are pretty expensive, if we're talking the same type of camera (removable lens, main controls not buried in menus, etc).

As for examples, Flickr shows what kind of camera was used if the person uploaded the data (it's done by default). Perhaps you could find some poorly exposed, fuzzy, images shot with the wrong white balance that were shot with a P&S, and then find some outstanding images shot with an SLR.

But really, if you're serious about photography, and want to have fine control over the instrument you use so that you can develop your skills, a well-designed SLR will go a long way towards making that happen. That would be what I would use to impress him - IOW, tell him your future career depends on it! Well, unless he wants you to be a doctor. ;-)

Good luck!

What happens when I get a scratch on my point and shoot camera?

Question by swimfreak000: What happens when I get a scratch on my point and shoot camera?
I have had this point and shoot camera (Olympus: Stylus 740) about a half a year. It had been perfect for a while! Vey small and still took great pics. Now when ever I take a pic I see a black dot in the mid right part of the pic. I also see it in the viewer. When I am zoomed out I see a larger unclaer dot and when it's zoomed in I see a smaller focused dot. I think I chipped or scratch my lens. What do I do now? Can it be repaired (Idk if you can replace point and shoot lenses)? If I can't replace the lenses is there another way to repair the lens? In other words how do I fix it?

Best answer:

Answer by teef_au
Most scratches on the outside of a lens cannot be seen in the final image. You describe your problem as a "dot" so I doubt it is a scratch at all. My humble guess that that you have dust inside the camera and that it has landed on the rear of the lens.

Some folks may tell you that a point and shoot camera won't get dust in it - but this is not true. Think about it, when your lens extends outward particularly from a small camera body like that, air must be drawn into the camera to occupy the space behind the now extended lens. This air can contain dust. Given the movement of the lens mechanism, dust can settle on the back of the lens in the "breeze" created by the movement.

Sadly this may be difficult to repair. I do not recommend bumping the camera in any way in an attempt to dislodge the dust as this would likely damage the camera before clearing the dust. This would be a return to manufacturer problem to repair. The cost well may be prohibitive.

Spend the money on a copy of photoshop instead ;-)
Then you can edit your photos.

What point and shoot camera would be best for an indoor concert?

Question by Anoe1221: What point and shoot camera would be best for an indoor concert?
I found out I can't use my DSLR at a concert that I'm going to so I need to look into getting a point and shoot camera. What is the best camera for the low light indoor concert? I'm not very close to the stage so I need something with a pretty good zoom on it. I want to try to stay under $ 200 if at all possible, but if that is unrealistic then I can bump that up.

You will need one that has manual exposure capabilities and an f/2.0 lens like the canon s95 but with a higher price tag.

How do i upload pictures from a camera to my macbook?

Question by Kristayyyy: How do i upload pictures from a camera to my macbook?
I have a little point and shoot camera (an olympus) and i have a USB cord to plug into my Macbook but when i plug my camera into my computer it doesn't recognize it and nothing pops up on my desktop saying theres something plugged in. Any help?

And i DO NOT have any external hard drive or whatever to put my memory card into.

Best answer:

Answer by Stephen M
Did you turn your camera on?

If the camera has a LCD screen, does it report that it is connected?

>my computer it doesn't recognize it and nothing pops up on my desktop< Nothing pops up on my Mac either but you see the device on the left side of the Finder window.

As an alternative to the Finder window, run the Image Capture application. Does it see a camera?

What tripod can i use for my digital point & shoot camera?

Question by Boo: What tripod can i use for my digital point & shoot camera?
I am about to purchase the Panasonic Lumix Dmc-zs3 point & shoot digital camera on amazon, and I want to buy a tripod too. I want it to be inexpensive and can be different sizes but i want to make sure it won't drop my camera or anything, will the mini flexible tripod work? I am just concerned that my camera won't stay on it

Best answer:

Answer by Jim A
Virtually any standard tripod will work because the thread size is standard throughout the industry for light weight cameras. I use those from Wal Mart at about $ 30 each.

I've been doing professional photography as a career for around 30-years. One tip and caution I would give. Never, ever walk away from a camera on a tripod. Lay it down, lay it across a table, take the camera down but never walk away. Sure as daylight someone will trip on it and bang.

Another caution I always use, I use the neck strap even when I'm standing at the camera when it's on a tripod. When I was a pro I watched to $ 35,000 cameras go to the floor - total loss. Don't let it happen to you.

One more caution, we read so many stories about people dropping their cameras. Always... always use a neck or wrist strap.

Good Luck, Jim

What point & shoot camera would you recommend under $550 that takes good night pictures?

Question by Daisy: What point & shoot camera would you recommend under 0 that takes good night pictures?
I was going to get the NikonD3100 but I have to buy lenses, and I can't afford them.
So now I'm going to look at a top end point and shoot camera that:
Takes good night pictures, has a pretty decent zoom.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by selina_555
Any of the bridge cameras should do you (such as the Canon Powershot SX40HS. Make sure the camera has the manual modes, too, to give you better control.

The most important part will be learning how to use your camera, to turn the ISO down and most of all, for night photography, to use a tripod plus either the timer function or an external shutter release.

What is the best point & shoot camera on the market?

Question by Tucson Kate: What is the best point & shoot camera on the market?
I am looking for a smaller/thin point and shoot camera, with a high mega-pixal. I am an amatuer, looking to get more into photography. Any recommendations for improving my skills, in addition to the camera, would be helpful! Thank you.
I currently have a Canon Powershot 8 MP. It is a good camera, but I don't like how big it is (not easy to take along in my purse!).

Best answer:

Answer by random_guy7531
Lots of megapixels on a point and shoot can actually be a bad thing. Your 8mp camera is actually probably as high as you'd want to go. More pixels crammed onto a tiny p&s sensor will just amplify the cameras noise without really helping image quality. You'll also find that image quality is about the same across any brands point and shoot line up, because the same sensor is used in most of the cameras. For example, Canons $ 450+ G9 uses the same small, noisy sensor as the significantly cheaper powershot a650. Your best bet for getting into photography would actually be an slr. They're getting pretty cheap nowadays, and can even cost less tahn point and shoots nowadays. Because size is a big concern for you, I'd look into some of olympus' offerings, most specifically the evolt e-410/e-420. You'd also probably want to pick up the 25mm pancake lens as well to reduce the size. However, you may also want to wait for Panasonic's G1 to come out. It'll be the first camera based on the micro four thirds system (in essence, the mini version of Olympus' current slr lens system). Basically, you get the sensor size and image quality of an slr with interchangable lenses and point and shoot simplicity. You can read the preview here (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/PanasonicG1/).

Hope this helps!
