How do I dry a digital camera that fell in the ocean?

Question by Mark: How do I dry a digital camera that fell in the ocean?
My digital point & shoot camera fell into the Atlantic Ocean and was quickly recovered. The camera was not on and the battery was removed when it was brought to the surface. Do I need to rinse in fresh water to remove the salt or should I just let it dry?

wipe it first so theres no salt damage, then take it all apart and put in a air tight box with bicarbonate of soda- a generous amount! leave for a few days and it should be in working order, goodluck! :))

  1. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you didn't get it directly into fresh water immediately after removing it from the ocean then the salt in the ocean water has already started working on it. You can try soaking the camera in fresh water and letting it sit, but chances are it's already ruined.

  4. After any soaking, especially in salt water, no matter how brief, the chances are that you have lost the camera as a functioning unit. Chances are that the memory card will be ok, so borrow a card reader to download any pics still on the card.
