  1. The size of the image sensor. And it's a very big deal. EVIL cameras like the Sony NEX have sensors so good, that it beats all the Canon dSLRs with the same size sensor, regardless of price (according to DXOmark). EVIL cameras that are four thirds like Panasonic and Olympus are very close to dSLR image quality. At the bottom would be the Nikon 1 series like the J1 and V1, their sensor are even smaller than 4/3rds, but larger than compacts. EVIL cameras also give you some options with lenses. Compacts, well your are stuck with whatever they give you.

The compact camera, no matter what the fancy features, the body construction, how good the lens is, the price, the brand, it can't get around the horrible quality of the tiny image sensor packed with too many pixels. Compacts are worthless in low light, Also lenses can't be changed.

While a Sony NEX can match or better some dSLRs though, it and all the other EVIL cameras lose the fast autofocus of a dSLR or SLT camera for still photography. Bottom line, EVIL camera crush compacts. Ignore those that call EVIL cameras toys, or a joke, they are selling like hot cakes around the world for a very good reason. People want quality, but don't always want or need the bulk of a dSLR.

The only advantage I can think of that compacts have (including megazooms) is that with a tiny image sensor.. it's a cheat, and you can get those huge zoom numbers in a tiny package. To get the same reach with an EVIL camera or dSLR you'd need a massive and expensive lens.
