What are point and shoot cameras? How do they differ from SLR cameras?

Question by Ariel Milazzo: What are point and shoot cameras? How do they differ from SLR cameras?
So far I understand that point and shoot cameras are cameras that use an optical view finder, rather than a semiautomatic mirror. But they differ from SLR cameras because: why?
Please Help?

Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by B K
it's the exact opposite . . .

Point and shoot cameras use an electronic viewfinder. SLRs have a mirror and a prism and an optical through-the-lens viewfinder.

DSLRs have larger sensors than point and shoot cameras, plus they have detachable/interchangeable lenses.

What is the most proffesional point and shoot camera on the market?

Question by justinekilledit: What is the most proffesional point and shoot camera on the market?
I have been looking at the canon g10. Is there anything better than this? Im wanting a point and shoot camera that will get me ready for a dslr. I will be using the camera for outdoor pictures of people. I know about the iffy iso...im not super critical of photos but I need it to be pretty darned crisp and clear for photo retouching. I like its build and look. Is this a good camera for me or should I try something else?

Best answer:

Answer by David M
That is a very good camera. You really couldn't go wrong with it. There are some bridge point and shoot cameras that are physically much larger and have much longer zooms but I feel that if you get one of those you might as well buy a DSLR.

how to remove the 4gb limit on my point and shoot camera?

Question by kenny c: how to remove the 4gb limit on my point and shoot camera?
ok my canon elph 110 point and shoot camera always stops at 4gb even though there's 4gb left on the card . I researched and it said it's the limit then I have to hit record again. I can't do this when i'm recording volleyball games since i'm playing. How do I make my camera record continuously without stopping.

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
You cannot

The 4 gb per video file is a physical restriction caused by the FAT32 format used by memory cards.

Since you can get from 17 to 20 minutes on a 4 gb file, it is no different than when we used to shoot 16 mm or 35 mm motion pictures

400 feet of 16 mm film only captured 11 minutes at 24 frame/s

400 feet of 35 mm film only captured 3.5 minutes worth of film.

So the 4 gb limit of from 17-20 minutes is actually a blessing to videographers

In order to shoot such long takes, you need to buy a mini-DV video camera and buy 60 minute tapes

It would be helpful in the future to tell us what camera brand and model number you have so we can answer you question more definitively. Since there is only one camera with a 30x optical zoom, I will have to assume that you have the Fujifilm FinePix HS10. Is that right?

As with any zoom lens that reaches beyond about 200 mm (Yours can reach out to 720 mm, 35 mm equivalent), you will at some point need a tripod or other means to secure the camera to avoid blurry images caused by camera movement.

Shooting from 24 mm (nice wide angle) to 720 mm (super telephoto) will give you a lot of versatility, but require you to spend some time learning how to use the camera under various lighting conditions and using the various focal lengths.

Macro is a different issue. If you really mean shooting closeup photos, then the HS-10 can focus with the lens 1 cm from the subject. Depending upon which focal length you choose, the magnification will vary.

A true macro lens, has markings on its lens barrel to allow the user the specify specific image to subject ratios like 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. These exact ratios are important when shooting forensic, medical and scientific assignments, but are not critical when shooting close ups of your favorite object.
