What is the best ricoh point and shoot camera?

Question by Yan: What is the best ricoh point and shoot camera?
I've been looking at Ricoh point and shoot cameras lately, but can't make up my mind on which one to get. Been leaning towards the GR Digital II or III. Any suggestions besides my picks? ricoh only

Best answer:

Answer by Qoph
Why are you focusing only on Ricoh? There are plenty of great manufacturers of digital cameras. Anyway, regardless of brand, the best one is the one that best suits you. We don't know your digital imaging needs. Are there certain features you are unsure about? List them in Additional Details and maybe I or someone else can clarify.

What point and shoot cameras have manual focus?

Question by danieln93@verizon.net: What point and shoot cameras have manual focus?
I am currently looking for a SLR-Like point and shoot camera that can shoot video in HD as well as have manual focus. Please keep the suggestions within a reasonable price range. Thank You!

Best answer:

Answer by Panda
The Canon SX20IS is a good camera, although a bit big,
i suggest the canon powershot G10, however, manual focus
on point and shoots are very unconventional, and also for
manual focus, it is still electronically controlled. i suggest
getting a REAL DSLR though.

How many megapixels are needed in a point and shoot camera?

Question by hardoon: How many megapixels are needed in a point and shoot camera?
I've been looking at two new point-and-shoot cameras - the Sony DSC-TX7 and the Canon Powershot S90. But strangely, both models only have 10 megapixels while costing more than many other cameras that typically offer 12-14 megapixels. I know you can't only consider the megapixel count, but why is this the case?

Best answer:

Answer by Vintage Music
5,6, or 7 megapixels is more than enough to get an excellent enlargement of 8X10. Without comparing cameras, could be one has many more features or more optical zoom.

What is a good digital point and shoot camera?

Question by Jule M: What is a good digital point and shoot camera?
I am looking to buy my daughter a digital point. and shoot camera. It must be easy to use and must NOT use AA or AAA batteries as she wears them out far to fast (ever the rechargables). It must have a plug in rechargable camera battery. I would like to keep the price in the $ 150.00 range and have it take decent pictures. 8+ MP would be nice. Anybody own or know of a camera(s) that would fit these specs?

Best answer:

Answer by cheechandchong
I have a Kodak point and shoot. It's called Kodak Easyshare. They have a variety of great colors. It's 10.3 megapixels. It was around 130 dollars at best buy. It's a great camera and has a large screen. It also has many different settings you can choose from or just use automatic. It's very easy to understand and operate.

Here's a photo :)

Would a digital SLR gives a better picture than a point & shoot camera?

Question by T E: Would a digital SLR gives a better picture than a point & shoot camera?
I have a Panasonic TZ3, a point and shoot camera, but I find that the photo color of my plants and flowers appears "washed". Would a digital SLR camera give a more colorful photo and if so, why?

Best answer:

Answer by selina_555
Yes and no. The bigger sensor as well as the better optics in a DSLR can and do give better results.

However, it still VERY VERY much depends on the person behind the camera.

You can put a fantastic professional camera in the wrong hands, and it will take lousy photos. A good photographer, on the other hand, can coax great photos out of even the simplest cameras.

Attend a class, borrow a few books on photography and read/ watch a bunch of online tutorials and you will learn a lot.
With some knowledge, you will take much better photos and you will know how to overcome (or at least realize) whatever limitations your camera has.

How do I compare zoom between point&shoot and DSLR camera?

Question by Robert Magrino: How do I compare zoom between point&shoot and DSLR camera?
I want to buy a camera with really good quality and very high zoom, I see a lot of point&shoot cameras that specify their zoom level, like some new models now indicate 20x zoom.
However, how would that compare to a dslr camera if I buy a telephoto lens or something,
how do I know if the dslr and lens have better than 20x zoom?

Best answer:

Answer by Veato
Most cameras now show the focal length in 35mm equivalents. If I take my old compact as an example then:-

It had a 10x zoom. The wide angle lens on this camera started at 25mm. That means simply the "zoom" was 25-250mm in equivalent terms as 25x10=250.

My DSLR lenses on the otherhand are:

18-55mm = 3x
50mm = 0x
70-300mm = 4.3x

Although the crop factor changes the values slightly in 35mm terms (18-55 becomes a 28-80 approx) the 3x "zoom" stays the same.

I think one of the biggest zooms on DSLR is the Tamron 15x 18-270mm

How can I take good quality pictures with a point and shoot camera?

Question by Ivy: How can I take good quality pictures with a point and shoot camera?
I'm looking for techniques in coming up with magnificent photos using only a handy point and shoot camera. Yeah, I have camera envy since I can't afford to buy an SLR or a DSLR. How do you make the most out of your compact camera? Can you give me some tips on how to take good nighttime pictures, underwater pictures, nature shots, landscape shots, moving objects, food, and portraits? What are the appropriate settings for these type of shots? Thank you. :)

Unless the camera has manual controls, use the appropriate scenic mode. These really make a difference. E.g. portrait mode will try to blur the background and give flattering skin tones, while landscape mode will get everything sharp and give you bright blue and greens.

You're asking for much...here are just some quick pointers:

Nighttime is a challenge for any camera, and P&S ones do especially poorly there. If your camera has manual controls, then take shots on a tripod or bag of beans with low ISO but long exposure times.

For landscape shots, zoom out as far as possible, use landscape mode or a closed down aperture to get everything sharp. Also try vertical orientation with a strong foreground subject before a nice background, thus putting things into perspective. Avoid a horizon in the middle of the shot, decide either to show a dramatic sky or a landscape and place the horizon at the lower fourth or fifth or the upper one respectively. If you use horizontal orientation, avoid having just more on the right of what you already have on the left - it may look like a breathtaking "emptiness" in real life, but on a photo it will be boring.
The time of the day is critical for landscape shots. Avoid bright noon sunlight like the plague. You get the best light in the hour after dawn or before dusk. It's nice and golden, and all the cast shadows enhance structures and give them a 3D look.

Study Jack Dykinga's work for examples:

I'm not into action or food photography so i cannot comment on those.

For portraits, use a zoomed in setting with a wide open aperture, take the shot from at least two meters away if the zoom permits it. That will give a more flattering perspective and with the zoomed in setting you can obtain at least a somewhat blurred background. Avoid direct flash, preferably take them under a cloudy sky or in shadow - that'll give you nicely soft light without harsh shadows.

My preference is for Nikon or Canon, but there are many other good cameras out there. If you go to Cnet.com you can search by manufacturer, price, etc. and read professional reviews as well as reviews owners have written. You can search for the best online price and the online merchants are given reliablity ratings, as well. There really is no substitute for seeing the camera, holding it in the store and going through the various functions and menus to see if it fits your needs, is easy and intuitive to use, etc.
