What brand of camera is better to buy for larger prints?

Question by Surfr: What brand of camera is better to buy for larger prints?
I am not a big photographer, but I want a simple, affordable point-and-shoot camera that will let me make good 8x10, or even 11x14, prints. I've looked around at different stores and taken a few test photos, but it seems like every camera produces an image that looks good on the LCD, but when I zoom in to look at it, it looks rather blurry or pixelated. Which brand of cameras takes pictures that produce better large prints?

Best answer:

Answer by Pooky
You might be looking at a smaller version of the photo taken by that model.

Keep in mind that point and shoot usually (except that weird Sigma DP 1) have smaller sensor v.s. a dSLR.

Try here: this is a 12 MP dSLR-a full size one.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2966355192/

Click on [all sizes] and click on [original] to see the full size.

another sharp one would be this http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2691305849/

this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2522671413/

and probably this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2520715156/

These will print fine at 20 x 30.

p.s. I was able to print clear photos with a point and shoot 3 MP Panasonic camera.

What kind of camera should I get DSLR camera should I get?

Question by betty lou2010: What kind of camera should I get DSLR camera should I get?
Right now I just have a point and shoot camera that doesn't take very good pictures. I want to spend under $ 1000. I want a camera that takes really nice pictures of the outdoors and daily life. I want a step up from plain digital, I want to take really nice photos but I don't know anything about it! Any advice would be appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by maxma327
I would suggest an entry level DSLR such as the Nikon D3100 or Canon T2i. Go to a reputable camera store and try them both out. Which one feels better in your hands? Which camera's menus, dials, etc feel more intuitive?

Don't expect to instantly take great pictures as there's a steeper learning curve with DSLRs than a point and shoot digital camera. Practice, practice, practice and learn all you can about proper exposure and the relationships between aperture, shutter speed, and iso. Just remember: while you can use a DSLR like a point and shoot camera by leaving it on auto mode, you really aren't using it to its potential.

Finally, join photography sites like www.dpreview.com and flickr to see and learn from other level photographers.

How do you fix a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot with a lens barrel that won't retract?

I have a Nikon Coolpix L18/L16 point and shoot camera. Have never had a problem with it until today, the lens barrel is stuck and won't retract. I thought maybe it was low battery power and put fresh batteries in it and it still won't retract! I'm scared to really try and force the barrel to retract has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?

What is the average longevity of a good Digital Compact Camera (if maintained properly) ?

Question by shankd67: What is the average longevity of a good Digital Compact Camera (if maintained properly) ?
How many years can I expect to see a digital point & shoot camera (esp. from a popular brand viz. Canon, Olympus or Nikon) ....working, if I operate & maintain it in a proper manner ?
My maintenance of any thing is quite good. I am from India and its a tropical country.

Best answer:

Answer by Al The Photo
I have been keeping score.

Here is a list of the various ways people have destroyed their cameras and posted on YA:

- Dropped camera.
- let my sister/brother/other borrow/play with my camera.
- Dog chewed up the SD card.
- Sprinkles from applying to fingernail polish, but some flaked off into the camera.
- Hairspray in the camera from bottle leaking in the purse.
- Got camera wet.
- My dog licked the lens.
- Left camera in pants and went through wash.
- dropped camera into dirt.
- lens popped out, so I pushed it back in.
- camera left outside in the rain for a day or two.
- found tiny bugs crawling around inside camera.

If you avoid all of this kind of abuse, It will last long enough to become obsolete.

What kind of point and shoot camera takes the best pictures?

Question by kcawh: What kind of point and shoot camera takes the best pictures?
I'm looking for more color quality than picture clearness. My limit would be around $ 300, but would like around $ 200. All the cameras I've had tend to take washed out pictures, and the coloring is never quite right, especially outside when it's sunny. I want blues that are blue, greens that are greens, and everything in between. Is it impossible to find a normal point and shoot digital camera that takes photos like that, or do I have to buy a DSLR?..

Best answer:

Answer by Jesse Ekin
I recentl got a Panasonic Lumix FT2- It's water-proof, dust-proof, shock-proof and freeze proof. It takes clear pictures with really good vibrant colours. It is also a HD video camera. I recommend it.
I bought it for about $ 350 it may be out of your price range but trust me it's worth every cent.

Do digital point & shoots use actual electro-mechanical shutters or do they just turn the sensor on and off?

Question by Mere Mortal: Do digital point & shoots use actual electro-mechanical shutters or do they just turn the sensor on and off?
Do you know which digital point & shoot cameras just toggle the sensor on and off to capture the image?

Best answer:

Answer by screwdriver
Only the cheap no name cameras have no mechanical shutter, they just scan the sensor, its like a 'screen grab' on a camcorder. Higher quality ones do, you can often hear it working. Its needed to accurately control the light falling on the sensor.

Look into the cameras lens if you can see the sensor it doesn't have a shutter if you can't then it does.

We're buying one for my sister's birthday and we want to get her a really good point and shoot camera. She's not a professional or anything.

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
As long as you avoid Kodak, Benq, Vivitar and GE, you can't go far wrong.

If she doesn't mind something a little bigger, and creative control, look at bridge cameras from Fujifilm or Panasonic (Lumix).

If you buy Canon or Nikon at this level, all you'll get is an expensive, but poorly-specified camera.

Is there a difference between the megapixel in digital point&shoot cameras and slr cameras?

Question by ilove.yomama: Is there a difference between the megapixel in digital point&shoot cameras and slr cameras?
I have a point&shoot 7.1 megapixel Sony Cybershot camera, and I want to get a Nikon D40. It has 6.1 megapixel. Should I get it? Is it worth it? Is there a difference between the megapixel and quality I'll get between the two cameras?

Best answer:

Answer by singletrack65
A 6MP DSLR is much better than a 14MP point & shoot camera.

There are many reasons. The main ones are
1) physically larger pixels gather more light and create less noise @ higher ISOs.
2) larger sensor makes better prints (especially @ 8x10 or bigger) since the picture doesn't have to be enlarged as many times.
3) a better quality lens (even kit lenses are better)
4) room to grow as your skill or ambition dictate.

No matter how many pixels a P&S camera has, they tend to break down around 8x10. I've seen 6MP images blown up to 16x20 and they still looked good.

Does having a wide angle lens really make a difference on a point and shoot digital camera?

Question by Mia G: Does having a wide angle lens really make a difference on a point and shoot digital camera?
I am torn between the Canon SD750 and the Canon SD800 IS. One of the differences is that the SD800 has a wide angle lens and the SD750 doesnt. But for these kinds of point & shoot camera will it really make a difference?

Thanks for any advice!

Best answer:

Answer by holacarinados
It depends on the difference between the widest focal lengths and what you plan to use the camera for. The best thing would be to check out both cameras in a store and ask if you could look through the viewfinder (ask the salesperson to accompany you to the front door of the shop if he/she gets suspicious). Explain that you want to get a sense of the difference in focal lengths. It's really the only way to decide since people have individual preferences. Also, If your point and shoot cannot be put on manual setting, there would be less of a need for the wider angle.

What is a good point and shoot digital camera under $150?

Question by Jack: What is a good point and shoot digital camera under 0?
I'm looking for a good point and shoot camera. Any suggestions? The only must is that it must have a rechargeable battery. I can't believe that there are cameras that still use AA or AAA batteries.

Thanks for your input!

Best answer:

Answer by wackychic547833
I have a canon powershot, not the ones on the commercials. It has a 10x optical zoom and 4x digital and I love it. It still takes AA batteries, but I bought the rechargeable ones. I don't think it was under $ 150, but I did get it on sale for I believe $ 200 or so, but under $ 250. I suggest going on walmart.com or bestbuy.com or wherever they sell cameras and just look and read all the reviews and everything. Good luck.

What is a good compact, point and shoot camera?

Question by <3: What is a good compact, point and shoot camera?
I am looking for a compact, point and shoot digital camera. I would use the photos from the camera mainly to upload to facebook. Also, the cheaper (for a good quality camera), the better. What is a good camera for me?

Best answer:

Answer by Lindsee Cooper
My favorite point-and-shoot that I EVER owned was the one I got recently at Costco..its the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1. It is amazing. The color and the quality of pictures is stunning...considering its just a point-and-shoot! It's compact and super easy to function and comes with a number of pre-set options. You can also manually adjust settings. I strongly recommend this camera!!

Which point & shoot digital camera has the fastest shutter time?

Question by GM5: Which point & shoot digital camera has the fastest shutter time?
I'm interesting in purchasing a point & shoot digital camera that has a fast shutter time. I recently purchased the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 but wonder if there's something out there that is faster. I don't want to spend more than $ 400. I would be using it for photographing my kids, who don't sit still for very long so I need the camera to be quick. But I also want it to be small enough to fit in my purse.

hmmm, you should set the ISO to the highest and the af should be seen too. this provides you high shutter speed. Good Luck!

What to use to clean lens on a point and shoot camera?

Question by Ed: What to use to clean lens on a point and shoot camera?
I have a point and shoot DSC-T100 Sony camera. It was really nice at the time. 8.1 mega pixels.
I have to admit it's a bit abused. I keep it in my pocket at all times for that "just in case moment". Now though because of that it's pretty beat up and the picture isn't so good anymore. I want to at least clean the lens (Since this is Halloween) but what do I use? Alcohol and a Q-tip?
Any ideas?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by pookle
I use the pre packaged eyeglass cleaner wipes. Used it on a hiking/ camping trip for my LUMIX camera, and it worked like a charm.

The lens was always getting suntan lotion or sand on it. The eyeglass cleaner cleaned the lens without any streaks at all.

What is a reasonably priced ($200 max) digital point and shoot?

Question by Anna: What is a reasonably priced (0 max) digital point and shoot?
I am in the process of researching point and shoot cameras, and I have read so many reviews I feel like my eyes are going to bleed! I figured I would give yahoo! answers a shot and see what you guys think.
I used to have a Canon Rebel T3 and I would say I am an intermediate photographer. I am only willing to spend about $ 150 (I will pay that for a used camera in good condition), and at the very most $ 200. The type of pictures I do are usually still life, portraits, landscapes (panorama a must), and concerts (low light shooting a must). I would prefer it to be smaller, but it doesn't have to be little, as long as it can fit in a case logic belt loop case. I like neat features, like color isolation, etc, but this comes second to overall image. That being said, I would like something that takes fairly clear pictures, has a semi-decent zoom, and is at least 12 mp. So, maybe I am asking too much, but if anyone has suggestions that fit most of these guidelines, please speak up! Thanks!!! :)

Best answer:

Answer by NickP
Staying to your price range, I would recommend two Fuji Finepix cameras.
First the Fuji FInepix S4500, this current model sells for about $ 150.00 and has more features on it than my first digital camera the Fuji Finepix S20 Pro. which cost $ 800.00! when digitals first hit the scene. If you want a "deal" so to speak, the last time I looked at these on amazon they had the previous model Fuji Finepix S4200 @ $ 129.00. I am a person who likes making 11x14's and 16x20's to hang in my home. Any camera I buy has to be able to satisfy me with a 11x14 the first day or so of ownership, or I return it. ( I use "one-hour" processor @ $ 4.00, Costco, Walmart, etc.)

I too, have a DSLR that sometimes is "pain" to pull out with the extra lenses etc. So I purchased a "refurbished" Canon Powershot SX10 IS @ $ 250.00, but that is a bit over your limit price. But I like it's many up to date features and especially the swing out LCD screen. The camera was/is in perfect condition except for a small area on the flash shoe where about 1/4th of an inch of paint is missing. Otherwise it is in perfect condition.

So there you are, you know how a retired professional thinks, I hope you can use some of my ideas!

I want to take pictures of fast moving objects without any blur, what kind of camera should I get?

Question by usesmx06: I want to take pictures of fast moving objects without any blur, what kind of camera should I get?
I want to take pics of my children playing sports, running around and just plain and simple being kids. I get a lot of blur with a basic point and shoot camera when theyre in movement. I want to capture them as frozen stills when they're about to catch that baseball or when they are in the air about to land in the pool.. What to do I need to look for in a camera to capture this?

Best answer:

Answer by Sound Labs
Freezing fast moving action is a camera setting thing, not a camera thing.

A better camera will have a higher percentage of accurate auto focus, but any camera can freeze the action. It's a matter of you taking control of the camera and getting out of auto mode.

some cameras have an 'action' setting, usually a little icon of a running person, some do not. Either way you need to increase your shutter speed. So the most simple way of getting a faster shutter speed, in day light with a common point and shoot digital camera is to get out of auto mode, and increase the ISO from the base (usually ISO 100) to 200 maybe 400.

From there, you camera will choose the proper exposure time which will now be higher. For point and shoot cameras, I would not recommend going beyond ISO 400 as noise will become very visible, and the camera will try to remove the noise with aggressive noise reduction and it will smear all detail.

How much does it cost on average to repair a cracked screen on a point-and-shoot digital camera?

Question by LOVELY.: How much does it cost on average to repair a cracked screen on a point-and-shoot digital camera?
I have a Pentax Optio M50. It's 8.0 megapixels, 5x optical zoom, and has a pretty good sized screen. It is a point and shoot camera. I bought it for 235, it is now worth around 180. The screen is cracked on the bottom and the rest of the screen is a fuzzy black. Approx. how much would it cost to fix this?

Best answer:

Answer by dan the man
how do you know its worth 180 now, i really dont know how much it would cost, from shipping and handling, the repair in materials and labor and return shipping, but i can only imagine that it would cost enough for it to not be worth it, maybe invest in a new camera and try to take better care of it. if you called the manufacturer they could prob give you an estimate

How come landscape/far away photos look as good from a point and shoot as an SLR?

Question by Mrmojo6068: How come landscape/far away photos look as good from a point and shoot as an SLR?
I recently bought a Canon Rebel XT, a Tamron 17-50mm lens ($ 450), and a Canon L 70-200mm lens ($ 550). After all that money spent on photography, I'm sometimes surprised by how crisp and clear photos of wide open scenes and landscapes taken with a cheap $ 100 point and shoot camera (taken by a complete amateur). Sometimes these photos seem to come clearer on the Point and Shoots. Why is that? It's discouraging! Thanks!!!

PS: I don't want you to think that I'm dumping on SLR's. Close up and portrait photos provide much better bokeh then a P & S.

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
There is a lot more leeway when shooting with wide angle lenses. Everything will fall apart though when you start enlarging P&S cameras images.

You are not in competition with the point and shoot crowd. Photographers shoot day in and day out and produce images that are consistantly good. The folks that shoot with $ 100 cameras can get a good one everyonce in a while.

I want to buy a Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot camera for around £100, help?

Question by Starstruck: I want to buy a Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot camera for around £100, help?
Sony Cybershots have never let me down in the past, so as a thank you to Sony I wanna purchase a new point-and-shoot camera. My knowledge of them are minimal, except that they've given me exceptionally good shots in the past. A few questions:

1. Which is the best value for money?
2. Is it worth waiting for a new model to come out?
3. What are the ones to avoid?

Best answer:

Answer by Italo E
I would recommend the Cybershot W330. great camera, great quick focus with clean, soft picture.
Another great camera is the Cybershot W350- they're both a little over you're budget.. right around $ 120-150 . The W350 also has the panoramic setting where you can take a picture of a larger area for scenic picures.

Both are great camera's for the price, but if you have a little more money to spend and still want a point and shoot i would recommend the Panasonic Lumix ZS5 or ZS7. They hand around the $ 230-270. I do like the sony's though.

How to get good pictures at a Pro Baseball game at night?

Question by jessie: How to get good pictures at a Pro Baseball game at night?
Tomorrow night I am going to my first pro baseball game and I'm sitting right behind the visitor's dugout. Today I got a Sony H55 Point & Shoot camera. Can someone give me some tips to get some good pictures?

Best answer:

Answer by Steve P
First and foremost, turn the flash OFF. REPEAT... TURN THE FLASH OFF. There is nothing more ridiculous than seeing a flash go off on people's cameras in a stadium. All it is going to light is the back of people's heads. With the flash off, the camera will set exposure for ambient light. The baseball field should be bright enough to get some decent shots, but that is a typical point and shoot camera, meaning you have no real control over shutter speed or aperture. You can set the ISO to 400, but any higher usually always gives horrible photos with the tiny sensor in that type of camera. Even ISO 400 will look bad if printed at anything much larger than 4 x 6. You might try experimenting with the Twilight and Fireworks scene modes with the camera. Try to keep the camera as steady as you can. Not having a viewfinder is a big disadvantage. Holding a camera out at arms length and trying to use a monitor is a recipe for blurred photos, but you have no option. Try not to use the zoom on the lens. The more you zoom out, (bring things closer), the more your aperture closes up and the more likely you will have underexposed and blurred photos.

Take plenty of practice shots before the game actually starts to get a feel for how you need to hold the camera and what kind of results to expect.

I'm looking for a new point and shoot camera and I want one that takes good pictures of people in movement. I dance and at competitions it sucks when all the pictures turn up blurry even with the 'image stabilizer' on.

Also, I want a point and shoot camera that can take video with sound.

Are there really really good digital cameras or advanced cameras that can do both? Can someone tell me a few cameras to look at.

What is the best all around point and shoot camera, sharp picture, battery, easy to use etc?

Question by : What is the best all around point and shoot camera, sharp picture, battery, easy to use etc?
I want a very good point and shoot digital camera. I need image stabilizer or equivalent ,take sharp photos with a rechargeable battery. Also a good view finder.

Answer by John P
A good viewfinder is hard to find these days, since few of the cheaper cameras have eye-level finders. Beyond that, every manufacturer would hope to fulfil your criteria from about £120 upwards.

Whats a good point and shoot digi camera with fast shutter?

Question by MiMi ♥: Whats a good point and shoot digi camera with fast shutter?
I need to buy a new point and shoot digitial camera. My sony cybershot from years ago is having issues but lasted awhile at that. I would like something with a fast shutter speed so I don't have to wait for it to auto focus and get the photo minutes later. Any suggestions? I would also like a camera that adjusts to the lighting and takes clear bright photos. Thanks

Answer by Jim A
There are some things in your questions that tell me you don't understand.

The speed of the shutter has nothing to do with how long it takes for the camera to focus and expose. That is called lag time. All automatic cameras have it. Some say they're faster but the difference can be measured in mili-seconds - that's not very much.

Get used to it, lag time is here to stay as long as you use an automatic camera.

Shutter speed on the other hand is the time it takes to properly expose your photo. If you set the
shutter speed, on an SLR lets say, at 1/500, that shutter will be open 1/500th of a second.
However the lag time to focus and expose may be 2-3 seconds.

There is no getting around lag time. The alternative is manual control with an SLR and that can take many times longer.

Is a point and shoot camera with an interchangeable lens as good as a DSLR?

Question by DN: Is a point and shoot camera with an interchangeable lens as good as a DSLR?
I've been looking at point and shoot cameras with interchangeable lenses and was wandering if they will take as good of a picture with DSLR cameras? Also with the interchangeable point and shoot cameras, will they capture night shots (for example the sky)? Thanks in advance for your help
Edited: The camera I'm talking about is the Sony Alpha Nex-5 which has interchangeable lenses but it has a LCD screen of the picture you're about to take which DSLR's don't use.

Are There Any Digital Point and Shoot Cameras Without Zoom and LCD?

Question by librazone1948: Are There Any Digital Point and Shoot Cameras Without Zoom and LCD?
Before going any further I would just like to state that the digital point and shoot camera market is the biggest racket on earth. They cost nothing to produce and that is why there are so many manufacturers in on this racket. Doing my own research I have noticed that the predominate cause of failure is either the lcd screen or the optical zoom. So please just answer the question.

Best answer:

Answer by DigitalPhotography
There are some without zoom but none without LCD. Having an LCD is the point of DSLRs..Market yes or no..It allows us to see photos first.

If you don't like that, go with an SLR/Analog.

Any point and shoot in the market that shows what settings you just took?

Question by Vintage Music: Any point and shoot in the market that shows what settings you just took?
Anyone knows of any point and shoot cameras that show what aperture and shutter speed you just took just by going back to that shot, Before taking photos home and seeing info on computer.
In other words I'd like to see my settings before I get home. If I shoot at F/5.6 and shutter sets itself, 5 min later with different lighting I'd like to see settings on my last shot to adjust settings manually.
Normally you see shots you took on computer, hit properties etc and see settings. Can I see info on camera on last shot I took before I go home?

Best answer:

Answer by anthony h
All of the Canon point and shoot cameras will display this information.

During playback, simply push the display button and the information for the shot--shutter speed, aperture, etc.---will be displayed on the screen.

I would think that all name brand cameras can do this; the no-name ones that are automatic only probably don't though.
