What brand of camera is better to buy for larger prints?

Question by Surfr: What brand of camera is better to buy for larger prints?
I am not a big photographer, but I want a simple, affordable point-and-shoot camera that will let me make good 8x10, or even 11x14, prints. I've looked around at different stores and taken a few test photos, but it seems like every camera produces an image that looks good on the LCD, but when I zoom in to look at it, it looks rather blurry or pixelated. Which brand of cameras takes pictures that produce better large prints?

You might be looking at a smaller version of the photo taken by that model.

Keep in mind that point and shoot usually (except that weird Sigma DP 1) have smaller sensor v.s. a dSLR.

Try here: this is a 12 MP dSLR-a full size one.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2966355192/

Click on [all sizes] and click on [original] to see the full size.

another sharp one would be this http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2691305849/

this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2522671413/

and probably this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pooky/2520715156/

These will print fine at 20 x 30.

p.s. I was able to print clear photos with a point and shoot 3 MP Panasonic camera.

What kind of camera should I get DSLR camera should I get?

Question by betty lou2010: What kind of camera should I get DSLR camera should I get?
Right now I just have a point and shoot camera that doesn't take very good pictures. I want to spend under $ 1000. I want a camera that takes really nice pictures of the outdoors and daily life. I want a step up from plain digital, I want to take really nice photos but I don't know anything about it! Any advice would be appreciated!

Answer by maxma327
I would suggest an entry level DSLR such as the Nikon D3100 or Canon T2i. Go to a reputable camera store and try them both out. Which one feels better in your hands? Which camera's menus, dials, etc feel more intuitive?

Don't expect to instantly take great pictures as there's a steeper learning curve with DSLRs than a point and shoot digital camera. Practice, practice, practice and learn all you can about proper exposure and the relationships between aperture, shutter speed, and iso. Just remember: while you can use a DSLR like a point and shoot camera by leaving it on auto mode, you really aren't using it to its potential.

Finally, join photography sites like www.dpreview.com and flickr to see and learn from other level photographers.

How do you fix a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot with a lens barrel that won't retract?

Question by Marilyn: How do you fix a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot with a lens barrel that won't retract?
I have a Nikon Coolpix L18/L16 point and shoot camera. Have never had a problem with it until today, the lens barrel is stuck and won't retract. I thought maybe it was low battery power and put fresh batteries in it and it still won't retract! I'm scared to really try and force the barrel to retract has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it?

You are correct in NOT forcing it to close

Question by balmuff: Is a Canon SD1000 a good camera to purchase?
I'm looking for an inexpensive point & shoot camera. So far all the reviews I've checked recommend the sd1000.
What do you think?
Would a Sony, Kodak or Panasonic be better?
I'm going on a trip through NA and want an easy to use camera that will take great snaps. Picture quality is most important to me.

Question by shankd67: What is the average longevity of a good Digital Compact Camera (if maintained properly) ?
How many years can I expect to see a digital point & shoot camera (esp. from a popular brand viz. Canon, Olympus or Nikon) ....working, if I operate & maintain it in a proper manner ?
My maintenance of any thing is quite good. I am from India and its a tropical country.

Answer by Al The Photo
I have been keeping score.

Here is a list of the various ways people have destroyed their cameras and posted on YA:

- Dropped camera.
- let my sister/brother/other borrow/play with my camera.
- Dog chewed up the SD card.
- Sprinkles from applying to fingernail polish, but some flaked off into the camera.
- Hairspray in the camera from bottle leaking in the purse.
- Got camera wet.
- My dog licked the lens.
- Left camera in pants and went through wash.
- dropped camera into dirt.
- lens popped out, so I pushed it back in.
- camera left outside in the rain for a day or two.
- found tiny bugs crawling around inside camera.

If you avoid all of this kind of abuse, It will last long enough to become obsolete.

What is a good point and shoot type camera for around $200?

Question by legin: What is a good point and shoot type camera for around 0?
I'm look to buy a camera for my best friend's birthday and a camera was one of the things she is looking for so I was wondering what a good point and shoot camera was.

Requirements:
NOT pink
Fairly large screen
Not too bulky

Also, for those of you who don't know what "point and shoot" means, it means that all you do is point the camera at your subject and shoot the picture, no real manual adjustments like the professional cameras.

Question by Mark: How do I dry a digital camera that fell in the ocean?
My digital point & shoot camera fell into the Atlantic Ocean and was quickly recovered. The camera was not on and the battery was removed when it was brought to the surface. Do I need to rinse in fresh water to remove the salt or should I just let it dry?
