I want to upgrade from my basic point and shoot digital camera?

Question by Ebs: I want to upgrade from my basic point and shoot digital camera?
I have a basic point and shoot digital camera and I would like to upgrade to a camera that will take higher quality photos. I don't have aspirations to become a professional photographer. I want to be able to take higher quality photos of friends, family, pets, and take high quality pictures during my vacations. I'm looking for a camera that is user friendly within the $ 300-500 price range.
I've done some research but am overwhelmed by all the options.

I would maybe look into the Nikon D3000. I have a Nikon and they are great!! It's $ 500.
But if your also looking for being able to shoot video, then choose something different because the D3000 doesnt have the video option.

hope i helped!!!

  1. You could upgrade to a top spec 'travel compact' e.g. Lumix TZ20, Fujifilm F550EXR, Sony HX9V

You could get a high spec point and shoot e.g. Canon Powershot G12 or S95, Lumix LX5, Nikon P7000

You could get a compact system camera e.g. Sony NEX-3, Olympus E-PL1

You could get a DSLR e.g. Pentax K-r, Nikon D3100

All will offer manual as well as auto modes to suit your ability. The high end compacts are extremely good quality and are even used by some pros as a backup camera for the pocket. They tend not to have much "zoom" though which is where a 'travel compact' comes in. The CSCs and DSLRs of course enable you to purchase more lenses in the future but they can be expensive. Also with a DSLR to get the most out of it you need to learn and know what you are doing.

  2. 300-500$ is not enough to see a big difference in quality image, for that price range you'll still in the point & shoot category (small sensor, that goes as well with bridge camera "the big zoom").

Go take a look at the Canon G12 & the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, those are probably the best camera in that price range, but If you really want a better quality image you'll need to increase your budget and get a DSLR,they have bigger sensor, they work better in low light situation and you can buy better lens.

  3. Canon's PowerShot S95 is a pocket-sized camera aimed at enthusiasts who want a compact model which doesn't compromise on features. Announced in August 2010, it replaces the earlier PowerShot S90 which revived the old S-series with a new look and direction. The new model makes a number of small, but worthwhile updates over the S90, including 720p HD video with stereo sound, in-camera HDR, Hybrid Image Stabilisation, Dynamic Range enhancement, Tracking AF, new special effects, a choice of aspect ratios and an improved finish.

  4. The Canon PowerShot SX30 IS is a 14 Megapixel super-zoom with a 35x optically-stabilised zoom lens.
