  1. well, the best one on the market at this moment is the Leica X1, which is $ 2000. In the near future, meaning a month maybe, Fujifilm will release their X1, which will reign as the best camera, the rumored price being somewhere around $ 1200

as for cheaper ones, the G12 is a pretty nice camera. Also look at the Nikon p7000 and Canon s95 for larger than most sensors (meaning better quality)

  2. Of all those cameras, the G12 is the best one. It's build quality is the best, features more manual controls, and has a larger sensor than all the other cameras here. A large sensor equals to better image quality. However, if zoom or small size is your main concern, it's obviously isn't the best choice.

The SX 30IS and the P100 are both known as superzoom cameras. They're pros are that it has a huge zoom range that allows you to take pictures of just about anything. Cons? They have worse image quality than cameras like the G12 (though about the same image quality as other normal point-and-shoots).

The Sony HX1 and HX5 are cameras I wouldn't consider. It lacks some manual settings that you would probably find useful in the future. It's basically filled with more "novelty" features that will appeal more to beginners rather than serious photographers. If you're a beginner, I doubt you'll notice the difference.

So in the end, I still recommend the G12. Another camera that has the same high image quality as the G12 but in a smaller form is the S95 and I would highly recommend that as well. Some other cameras you should consider include the Olympus XZ-1 and the Panasonic LX5, both very high quality point-and-shoots as well.
