I want to take pictures of fast moving objects without any blur, what kind of camera should I get?

Question by usesmx06: I want to take pictures of fast moving objects without any blur, what kind of camera should I get?
I want to take pics of my children playing sports, running around and just plain and simple being kids. I get a lot of blur with a basic point and shoot camera when theyre in movement. I want to capture them as frozen stills when they're about to catch that baseball or when they are in the air about to land in the pool.. What to do I need to look for in a camera to capture this?

Freezing fast moving action is a camera setting thing, not a camera thing.

A better camera will have a higher percentage of accurate auto focus, but any camera can freeze the action. It's a matter of you taking control of the camera and getting out of auto mode.

some cameras have an 'action' setting, usually a little icon of a running person, some do not. Either way you need to increase your shutter speed. So the most simple way of getting a faster shutter speed, in day light with a common point and shoot digital camera is to get out of auto mode, and increase the ISO from the base (usually ISO 100) to 200 maybe 400.

From there, you camera will choose the proper exposure time which will now be higher. For point and shoot cameras, I would not recommend going beyond ISO 400 as noise will become very visible, and the camera will try to remove the noise with aggressive noise reduction and it will smear all detail.

  1. There are a number of cameras you can purchase to get that shot. What you need to look for is a camera capable of high shutter speeds like 1/320 or 1/500 of a sec.

  2. You need a camera and lens combination that is capable of obtaining a good exposure with a shutter speed of at least 1/250 (1/500 would be better).

The best way is to get a DSLR along with a couple of nice lenses, THEN learn how to properly use it.

  3. Take a look at Canon 550D. It's called the Canon Rebel T2i in the US. It has an 18 mega pixel sensor and takes great photos. It also has 1080 HD video, with a choice of frame rates. The video quality is superb, it looks great on my high definition TV.
